Messenger App and Attendance FAQs
As we wrap up the semester, here are key attendance reminders:
- Absences/tardies are excused only if they meet the reasons in the Student/Parent Handbook.
- Excused absences (with documentation): medical appointment, death of an immediate family member, college visit, driver’s education.
- Excused tardies (some require documentation): medical appointment, driver’s education, accident involvement, bus delay/breakdown, family emergency. “Traffic” is not excused. Students have two grace tardies per semester for unexpected delays.
- CVCA is a closed campus: students may not leave and return during the school day except for a medical/dental appointment.
1. Why do I need to put things in School Messenger? It lets the school know that your student has your permission for the following:
- To be out sick
- To leave for an appointment
- To arrive late or leave early to/from school
2. Will using School Messenger automatically excuse my student’s absence? Not necessarily…
- For an absence or tardy to be excused, it must qualify under the allowable reasons listed in the Student/Parent Handbook.
- Excused Absences (medical appointment, death of an immediate family member, college visit, driver’s education – all with documentation).
- Excused Tardies (medical appointment, driver’s education, involvement in an accident, bus breakdown or delay, family emergency – some require documentation). Please note that “traffic” is not excused. Students receive two grace tardies each semester to account for unexpected issues such as traffic.
- All documentation can be emailed to attendance@cvcaroyals.org, or a paper copy can be promptly dropped off at the Main Office.
- As a reminder, CVCA is a closed campus. Students are not permitted to leave campus during the day and return for any reason other than a medical or dental appointment.
3. Is using the app or the attendance line mandatory? Yes, we require that all absences or tardies be recorded by a parent/guardian in School Messenger. We care deeply about the safety and security of our students, and having a single platform to track this important data is the best way to ensure we maintain accurate records.
4. How do I get the School Messenger App? You can download it HERE or through the Attendance section on the MY CVCA page. The direct attendance line is 1-833-687-2208.
Traffic Flow Reminders
As we prepare for the start of the new semester, there are several things to keep in mind as you navigate student drop-off and pick-up times and locations.
- Be patient as we all work to manage traffic flow. It will improve over the next couple of weeks as everyone falls back into a routine.
- Due to heavy traffic at the Middle School Entrance, middle school students may also utilize the high school drop-off location and enter through the Athletics side entrance.
- Use caution when driving through the parking lot, especially with ice and snow.
- Do not drive over grassy areas on campus.
- Please watch your speed when driving through our parking lots.
- Keep in mind the following Drop-off and Pick-up Instructions, and note that the Rasnick Center is not a drop-off or pick-up location.

Before School:
- Students may arrive at school as early as 7:15 a.m. ALL students arriving between 7:15 a.m. and 7:30 a.m. should use the Royals Fieldhouse entrance. No other doors will be open before 7:30 a.m.
- If at all possible, students should arrive between 7:30 a.m. and 7:45 a.m. and proceed directly to their first class of the day. All entrances are open to students at 7:30 a.m.
- Students should be dropped off at the following doors between 7:30 a.m. and 7:50 a.m.: Learning Commons, New Entrance, or Middle School Entrance.
- Students who have parked their cars may enter at the Rasnick Center, but cars may not drop students off there.
- Please do not drop off students at the main entrance after 7:25 a.m. as this space is reserved for school buses.
After School:
- The same doors used for drop off may be used for pick up.
- For the safety of all students, it is critical that families pick up students as close to the 2:50 p.m. dismissal time as possible. If a student does not have an extracurricular practice, meeting, or rehearsal, they need to leave campus.
- In order for thorough cleaning to occur each afternoon, the building needs to be clear of students by 3:05 p.m.
- Between 2:50 p.m. and 3:05 p.m. students should transition to their after-school practice or leave campus immediately at 2:50 p.m.
- General supervision will not be provided after 2:50 p.m. Students involved in athletics, fine arts, and other after-school activities are under the supervision of coaches, advisors, etc.
Snow Day Notifications
In the case of inclement weather or other emergency conditions, CVCA families will also be notified via text message and email, so please make sure your contact information is up to date in our Family Portal.

Shya Designs House Parties
Since 2016, the student-run Shya Designs (part of the School of Business and Entrepreneurship) has partnered with a women-owned business in Rwanda. We support their business by purchasing their unique, high-quality creations, then share their powerful stories and sell their products here in the States. The best way to support this mission is by hosting a Shya Designs house party! These events are vital for sharing the women’s stories and driving sales. Interested in hosting an empowering event in your home or learning more about our work? Please contact pzhu26@cvcaroyals.org or jswi26@cvcaroyals.org.

WEBSITE HIGHLIGHTS
Canvas or Family Portal?
Do you know the difference between Canvas and Family Portal? Both are easily accessed through the MY CVCA page and serve as valuable tools for CVCA families.
- Canvas (LMS – Learning Management System) is the hub for academics. Students use it to submit assignments, track due dates, and engage with course materials.
- Family Portal (FACTS) is designed for school-related business. Parents use it for payments such as field trips and activities. It also provides access to student transcripts, progress reports, and report cards – the only academic crossover with Canvas.

SCHOOL AND COLLEGE COUNSELING
Learn how to Earn College Credit at CVCA – January 14 Meeting
The Office of School and College Counseling will host a meeting about Avenues Toward College Credit at CVCA on Wednesday, January 14, 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. in the Learning Commons. Parents of students in grades 8-11 are invited. Students are also welcome.
Earning college credit during high school can help students begin college or university with advanced standing, often with some general education requirements already completed. Beyond the academic benefits of advanced coursework, early college credit can also lead to significant financial savings. Many high school credit-earning options are low-cost or even free, compared to traditional college tuition.
With thoughtful planning, a qualified CVCA student may graduate having earned enough college credit to equal a semester or even a full year of coursework. Students can pursue college credit through:
- Advanced Placement (AP) exams
- College Level Examination Program (CLEP) exams
- Dual credit opportunities, including options that may qualify for funding through Ohio’s College Credit Plus (CCP) program (While CCP can include taking classes at a local university, students do not need to leave CVCA during the school day to participate.)
Come learn how qualified students can gain college experience and earn transferable credit at little or no additional cost while still fully participating in the CVCA high school experience.
