Eighth grade has won the CVCA Spirit Stick for a second year in a row! Congratulations!

MATH

Pre-Algebra – Zach Davis: zdavis@cvcaroyals.org

Algebra 1 – Kate Raymond: kraymond@cvcaroyals.org

PRE-ALGEBRA: Students are working through Chapter 2, which focuses on solving equations and understanding slope.

  • Please note that any content marked as missing in Canvas is indeed missing. It is either missing because the student did not complete it, or they were absent. Take a look at the comments on each assignment to see why it was marked missing. Students may turn in missing work for 80% credit up until the chapter test.
  • Please check with your student nightly about their Envision Math homework

ALGEBRA 1: We are finishing functions,  sequences, and scatter plots. We will be solving systems of equations before Christmas and preparing for our midterm.

  • Please encourage your student to keep their graphing calculator charged and in their backpack. We are using these almost daily now.
  • Please keep praying for Mr. Muklewicz!

SCIENCE

Science 8 – Tammy Smith: tsmith@cvcaroyals.org

Physical Science – Kelli Brown: kbrown@cvcaroyals.org

All science classes began the year by learning about the way we approach the subject of science. We are trying our best to create mental models of how things really are. The scientific method helps us better understand the world around us. Any of the subjects we cover in science will reflect a designed and beautifully formed world with the fingerprints of the Creator all over it!

SCIENCE 8: We are learning about various types of waves, including sound and electromagnetic waves. Waves have a very predictable way of acting, which reflects the orderliness of God’s creation. This also led students to take a close look at the ear and eye. What an amazing design!

PHYSICAL SCIENCE: Students are studying physics and the natural laws God has put in place when it comes to forces and movement. In the coming weeks, students will have the opportunity to design their own egg drop container. This fun activity is always a favorite as students try to use the ideas they have learned to create a protective structure that will save their egg from cracking on impact!

ENGLISH

Lisa Spodnik: lspodnik@cvcaroyals.org

Julia Bowers: jbowers@cvcaroyals.org

Students are learning about elements of plot and theme and applying their understanding of these elements to various short stories and the play, The Diary of Anne Frank. At the end of this unit, students will have the opportunity to construct their own creative narratives, demonstrating their understanding of plot, setting, and theme. We’re excited to see the creativity of our students!

SOCIAL STUDIES

Jordan Samsonas: jsamsonas@cvcaroyals.org

Stephanie Sondej: ssondej@cvcaroyals.org

Students have been learning about the beginnings of the country and how Europeans got to the Americas. We are also learning about the sinfulness of man as we pushed the Native Americans off their land, and mistreated and enslaved them. We have just started with the English colonies, but in the weeks to come, we will learn about the African Slave Trade and the events that led up to the Revolutionary War.

We continue to encourage students with good study skills and reinforce the content through the homework they complete.

BIBLE

Eileen Hoffman: ehoffman@cvcaroyals.org

Jordan Cavanagh: jcavanagh@cvcaroyals.org

Kristina Quigley: kquigley@cvcaroyals.org

Sarah Telepak: stelepak@cvcaroyals.org

We have come to know each other well through discussions and fellowship. Students just finished a great background unit about:

  • The truth and accuracy of the Bible
  • Pictures of God’s love and salvation through Jesus in the Old Testament
  • Reasons why the Roman Empire was the perfect place to spread the gospel
  • Finished our unit on 1-6

Our next unit is on Acts 7-12. Feel free to ask questions about the adventures of the Apostles as we dig into at least one chapter per week and discuss the early formation of the church!

SPANISH

Margaret Tumino: mtumino@cvcaroyals.org

We are building the launchpad that will carry students into Levels 2, 3, 4, and even AP ¡allá vamos! Right now, we’re having fun with the basics: nouns, articles, infinitives, and those first steps into verb conjugation.

  • This year is extra exciting because we’re diving into a brand-new curriculum called Encuentros, which comes with a super interactive online program and a workbook that keeps things hands-on and engaging.
  • To keep vocabulary practice fresh and fun, we use Gimkit and Quizlet. Students get so competitive that half the time it feels more like a game show than a class!
  • On our longer block days, we slow things down in a meaningful way by studying the book of John in the Bible together, giving students the opportunity to grow in both language and faith.

ART ELECTIVE

Kiara Brown (Art): kibrown@cvcaroyals.org

Seven Principles of Design Project: Students learned the seven principles of design (ex., movement, emphasis, patterned, etc.) and worked in a group to create a specific principle correctly while using markers and colored pencils. The winners received candy!

TECHNOLOGY ELECTIVE

Ben Weber: bweber@cvcaroyals.org

In Experiencing Technology, students have completed a unit in Graphic Design using Canva. We are now beginning a detailed unit on 3D design. Students will soon design objects to be printed on 3D printers, with multiple iterations.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Heather Rios: hrios@cvcaroyals.org

Nick Cook: ncook@cvcaroyals.org

Almost time to bowl! PE classes will head to Clutch Lanes during their class time in November. Look for a permission slip to come home soon.

GUIDANCE COUNSELING

Mrs. Beth Marosi: bmarosi@cvcaroyals.org

Mr. Ryan Baxter: rbaxter@cvcaroyals.org

Mrs. Beth Marosi (students with last names A-K) and Mr. Ryan Baxter (students with last names L-Z) are the middle school counseling team, and helped welcome your students to 8th grade this quarter. They recently visited the Bible classes so students know who they are and how to find them for drop-in visits or questions. Feel free to reach out with questions!

SERVICE

Eileen Hoffman: ehoffman@cvcaroyals.org

Bible teachers have introduced CVCA’s 16-hour requirement for volunteer hours that are due by May 1.

  • If you get a text or email from an organization called “Helper Helper,” it is not spam.
  • Students are required to send approval requests for their ministry-related hours to a parent or guardian.
  • You can ask your student to show you the “information” section of their Bible Service class in Canvas if you have any questions about this great opportunity to put faith into practice.

SMO
