GENERAL INFORMATION

Sarah Telepak, MS Principal: stelepak@cvcaroyals.org

Jonathan Knab, MS Assistant Principal: jknab@cvcaroyals.org

A couple of reminders as we get close to the end of the quarter:

  • Check Canvas Daily
  • End of the first quarter: October 8
  • Middle School Fall Break: October 8-12
  • Canvas Symbols:
    • When looking at your student’s Canvas gradebook, you will notice that late assignments are labeled with a BLUE LATE.
    • If the assignment is marked with a RED MISSING indication, this means the teacher has NOT received it, whether on Canvas or on paper.
    • Teachers try to make sure that every assignment is accurately labeled by the end of the day.

Word of Encouragement: Great job showing school spirit for Spirit Week! It was amazing to see the creativity and excitement. Continue with the excitement and hard work as we near the end of the first quarter!

MATH

Haley Shedden: hshedden@cvcaroyals.org

Sean McDowell: smcdowell@cvcaroyals.org

  • It has been a great start to the school year, and we have loved getting to know your students! We began the year with an introductory chapter reviewing whole-number operations.

  • Students recently completed their first quiz, and we will have our first unit test on September 22. The study guide will be a great resource as students practice and review the topics we have learned.

  • We had our first Math Workshop of the year and will continue these workshops twice a month as a fun and engaging way for students to practice their math skills.

  • Reminder: Students are required to show their work on the grid paper we provide for every online homework assignment. Showing work is an important habit that helps students develop strong mathematical thinking and prepare for future math courses.

SCIENCE

Karen Shelford: kshelford@cvcaroyals.org

Tammy Smith: tsmith@cvcaroyals.org

  • We began the year with the Penny Lab, where we learned to collaborate with our lab partners and think like scientists. We made hypotheses, made observations, and drew conclusions. Be sure to ask your student how many drops of water they successfully placed on a penny and how they could improve that number.
  • We have now transitioned into our Matter Unit, which covers what matter is, the states of matter, density, and both physical and chemical changes. This topic will carry us through to the end of the first quarter.
  • In Mrs. Shelford’s classes, we are soon starting our Leaf Collections! We are excited for students to discover the trees that are native to Ohio, along with some non-native varieties that may even be growing in their own yards, often without them realizing it! Happy leaf hunting!

ENGLISH

Traci Willison: twillison@cvcaroyals.org

Jennifer Davies: jdavies@cvcaroyals.org

  • In English, Membean will be assigned as homework during the first grading period, which runs until October 4. Please encourage your student to show you their Membean Dashboard so you can review their weekly progress.

  • We will continue reading “Holes” this month and next. Throughout this novel study, we will share our thoughts through journaling, and we will conclude with a personal narrative essay and a class party.

  • We will also begin our grammar work using our grammar workbooks. Our focus will be on writing complete sentences, correcting fragments, and using proper capitalization.

SOCIAL STUDIES

Christian Canonico: ccanonico@cvcaroyals.org

Josh Junko: jjunko@cvcaroyals.org

  • We began the school year by learning the basics of geography, including the number of continents and oceans in the world.
  • Now, we are preparing to start our second unit by exploring the question: What is a civilization? Students will be divided into groups, where they will attempt to run their own civilization. They will encounter historical situations and be presented with a series of choices to determine the best course of action for their civilization.
  • Additionally, we will start studying our states and capitals. Weekly quizzes will cover different regions, with 7-9 states and their capitals at a time. Seterra will be a valuable resource for your students in this endeavor! Various materials are also available in the Canvas module for students to use.

BIBLE

Jenna Barbieri: jbarbieri@cvcaroyals.org

Mazie Smith: masmith@cvcaroyals.org

  • Your students have been working hard to learn about and study the Bible! After our first test last week, they are now diving into the first five books of the Bible.
  • Test Grades should be completed by now. If your student is not pleased with their first test grade, they will learn about an assignment this week that will help them learn the material more fully and improve their grade.

WORLD LANGUAGE

Alissa McGough: amcgough@cvcaroyals.org

Heather Bartel: hbartel@cvcaroyals.org

  • In Mrs. Bartel’s classes, we are off to a strong start learning Latin through stories! We heard the story of the Wildebeest, the story of Isabella and Ronaldo, and this week we will hear the story of Bella. The students are learning so much Latin already! Feel free to have them teach you what they have learned, or have them read one of our stories to you!

GUIDANCE COUNSELING

TBD

SERVICE

Eileen Hoffman: ehoffman@cvcaroyals.org

CVCA requires all students to complete 16 hours of service in their churches or communities. This is administered and “tracked” in Bible classes. We will devote time in Bible class at the end of 1st Quarter to go over the details of Service Hours: what “counts” for Service Hours, how to “tell CVCA we did them,” when they are due, etc. If your student has done anything they think might count for service hours, they should write down what they did, where, and when so they can report it once we discuss service hours in class.
