A Message from Dr. Matt Koons, CVCA Headmaster
We are committed to your students’ safety as we find hope in the Gospel
In the wake of last week’s tragic school shooting in Florida, the fragility of life and the severe brokenness of our world is ever-present. I am often reminded of the troubling reality of living in a sinful world; it causes us to long for the shalom that God originally intended. In Romans 8, Paul states that the “whole creation has been groaning together.” The peace that God intended in Genesis has been polluted, corrupted, and perverted. We have regrets and hurt, pains and disharmony. However, we have the hope of the Gospel.
The pain and confusion that we observe in the world can only be redeemed by the work of Christ. In 2 Corinthians 3 Paul reminds his readers that there is a freedom and hope in the Lord (v.17). He writes that “And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another” (v.18) We are fragile jars of clay (4.7) that hold the wonderful transformative power of the gospel. “So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal” (4.16-18). Paul then boldly asserts (despite our groanings) that we can have courage in a hopeless world (4.4-6) because “if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come” (5.17). We are grateful for the opportunity to share this good news, hope, and joy with our students on a daily basis.
CVCA is committed to both the spiritual well-being and the physical safety of students. Please be assured that we take our student safety very seriously and covet your prayers as we continue to assess and update our own safety procedures in conjunction with the State of Ohio requirements and best practices. We are grateful for our ongoing partnership with the Cuyahoga Falls Police Department and the privilege of having Officer Bill Shover on CVCA’s campus. We recognize the partnership and trust that you have placed in us as Christian educators.

SOBE Teams Selected for Prestigious Competition
Each year Veal Youth Entrepreneurship Forum out of Case Western Reserve University holds an entrepreneurial competition for high school innovators called the thinkBIG! Competition. This year our SOBE seniors joined 184 teams across Ohio in submitting business pitches for consideration. About a month ago we learned that three of our four submissions moved on to the semi-finals. This meant they were deemed by professional judges to be in the top 15%—an incredible honor in it’s own right!
From that small semi-finalist group, students went through a rigorous process to determine the top four groups out of all submissions. These four finalists all receive $1,000 and compete at the thinkBIG! conference in a LIVE Business Pitch showdown in front of a packed house for a chance at the grand prize and $5,000!
This year, CVCA’s SOBE is excited to have, not one, but TWO teams chosen to be in the finals of this prestigious competition! What an incredible honor and exciting opportunity to show Christ at this wonderful event!
We covet your prayers as they go through the stressful steps of preparing for this big presentation. If you see these students, ask them about the business they pitched. Not only will you hear about their incredible work, but you also help them practice for their big pitch on February 27. Please join us in recognizing the following SOBE students for this incredible honor:
Business: What’s For Lunch? | Team: Josh Flenniken, Colin Gaines, Hudson Hall, Will Lux, Lance Rybka, Ben Watterson
Business: Simply Flow | Team: Jayla Gulley, Angie Gunawardana, Desia Hamm, Imani Long, Janiyah Spears
Business: Servare | Team: Kaitlyn Beebe, Ray Benson, Jong Kim, Walter Miller, Regan Nickol, Tyler Thomas
