Chess Team is Performing Well
Halfway through the season, CVCA's chess team remains in the running for a playoff spot in the Akron League.
In recent competition, the Royals defeated Western Reserve Academy 3 to 2 and Walsh 3 to 1. The team drew with Revere and then lost to defending champion Copley 3 to 2. Adam Huber and Austin Hollopeter played the first two boards with Yoocheol Seok, Jim Cooper, and freshman Steve McDougald completing the team.
In the Reserve Division, the B team currently leads the league after winning all four of its matches, while the C team, at 3-2-1, also remains in competition for a playoff position.
In two Canton League tournaments, the Royals have competed succesfully. Seok won the Under-1000 Division in the October tournament with three victories and a draw. Seventh grader David McDougald won three of four games in the Under-750 Division of both tournaments.
In December's Northeast Ohio Middle School Championships, three seventh graders placed third, led by Allison Berry (3-2) on First Board. David McDougld and Josh Chung completed the team.
Twenty-one students have completed for the various teams this year, highlighted by David McDougald's team-best 15 - 6 record. The Royals' top player, junior Adam Huber, maintains a 7-6-1 record against the best players in Northeast Ohio.
