Leaving a Legacy
Although winning records and successful seasons are somewhat new to women’s soccer at CVCA, a strong senior class helped lead the program to new heights this year, building on the previous year’s success. The Lady Royals achieved a third consecutive winning season (a first), as they set records for most wins (13) and fewest losses (3). Many would agree that this group formed the best team in CVCA women’s soccer history. The team set other records in shutouts (14), allowing only 10 goals in 20 games. They also advanced further than any other team before them as they reached the District Championship game for the first time. To reach this goal, the Royals had to go through St. Vincent-St. Mary, a team victorious over the Royals since 2001. In the championship game, CVCA faced the number-two ranked team in the state, Hoban. Having not lost a game since last playing Hoban in the third game of the season, the Royals knew this would prove an exciting game. After 110 minutes of scoreless regulation and overtime, the game went to a shootout with Hoban winning 4-3. Hoban would finish runner up in the State Championship.
Throughout the season, the Royals continued to show balance and reflect the body of Christ, following I Corinthians 12. “Testify” was the theme this year, and this team worked together to represent Christ and their school in both sportsmanship and soccer. Those returning next year will continue to build upon the legacy built by the 2008 season’s seniors: Brittany Black, Brittany Chung, Becca Coffey, Julie Keslar, Joell Maisano, and Ashley Massa. The future is bright as four freshmen started in the championship game, including an offensive trio that scored 18 goals this year.
