Ice Hockey 2008 Review

CVCA Varsity Hockey
CVCA varsity hockey participated in the Blue Central Division of the Cleveland High School Hockey League. The Royals took to the ice this season with six returning seniors and two returning juniors. To round out the team, eight new players joined: two seniors and six freshmen. While only two of the new players brought hockey experience to the team, the other six made a commitment to learn the fundamentals to contribute to the Royals’ season.
Senior Justin Beausoleil stepped up to learn the critically important goaltending position. As an experienced baseball catcher with an intense focus in competition, Justin completed the season with a 79.3% save percentage, facing 1044 shots in 25 games. In a season highlight, Justin earned a shut-out against Brush High School this season.
Seniors Mike Watkins, Matt Griffith, and Austin Crass comprised the cornerstone for the team’s defensemen positions. Austin earned a Second Team All-Star defensemen position on the Blue Central Division All-Star Team. Junior Eric Krolik and freshman Steve Harris also contributed at the defensemen positions.
Seniors Dewy Emerson (assistant captain), Sam Abood, and Chris Thomas (captain) led the offensive initiatives for the Royals this year. Sam Abood and Chris Thomas earned Second Team All-Star forward positions on the Blue Central Division All-Star Team, and Sam earned Honorable Mention on the Blue Division All-League All-Star Team. Sam and sophomore Ross Crocker led the team in points, each earning 10 points (five goals and five assists). Impressively, Ross achieved a hat trick (three goals in one game)! MVP Chris Thomas earned seven points, and Dewy Emerson earned six points. Senior Ryan Molnar joined the team this year, providing important backup for the offensive lines.
Hopes are high as the Royals look toward next season. Freshmen John Fisher and Steve Harris will bring hockey experience to the young team, joined by Ross Crocker, Jon Lile, Alex Hamilton, and James Wilson. In addition, juniors Beau Ulrey and Eric Krolik will provide maturity and leadership to the team next season.
For Bruce Jentner and Fred Lombardi, their roles as CVCA hockey coaches will end with this season. “The boys have worked hard this season and competed well in the Blue Division of the Cleveland High School League. Several qualified coaches and a number of experienced hockey players have expressed interest in the CVCA varsity hockey program for next season. The future looks bright for the CVCA hockey program.”
