With six returning varsity players, the Lady Royals’ golf team had high expectations for this year. They were the defending champions of the GAGGL and were hoping to repeat, as well as become the first women’s golf team to qualify for districts and state play. Also, returning district qualifier Jennah Romansky had her sights on a top 10 finish at the state tournament.
The girls began in late July and early August to prepare for a season that would bring many team and individual accomplishments, and yes, some disappointments. The girls finished the league season with an 11-3 record, which, unfortunately, was only good for 3rd place. The team was runner-up in the post-season league tournament. The good news at the tournament was that Christene Gesing made 2nd team all league and Jennah made 1st team for the 3rd straight year. Jennah was also the medalist (best score) at the tournament.
After league play, the girls set their sights on goal number two, qualifying for districts. Praise the Lord! This was accomplished. Never before had a girls’ team made it to districts. The members of that group were Jennah, Christene, Hannah Ross, Heather Alberson, and Madi Yates. We were excited about participating at the next level. Although not playing in the tournament, Noelle Lewis, Katie Johnson, and Vickie Smrekar were very supportive.
Good and not so good news came out of district play. The team was not able to qualify for state play, but as an individual, Jennah became the first CVCA women’s golfer ever to qualify with a fine score of 81.
At states, Jennah finished 22nd out of 72 players. This did not meet her high expectations, but was a great achievement, nonetheless!!
The five senior players, Jennah, Christene, Noelle, Heather, and Hannah, all have a GPA over 3.5, which makes them Academic All-Ohio athletes! It is hard to say goodbye, as we shared many happy memories over ice-cream, chipotle, and “van talk.” These seniors will be missed!! The CVCA family is very proud of you, for your successes in golf, but more importantly, for being servants for Christ.
