Men’s Varsity Golf – 2009
The men’s golf team entered the ’09 campaign as a team with three goals: 1) Win the PAC Championship, 2) make it out of Sectionals, and 3) shoot a 320 at Districts and see where the chips fall. With only two players from last year’s team having significant varsity experience, Coach Bucciarelli looked to develop the depth for a late season run down to Columbus again. The year began early with a pre-season trip to Northstar Golf Club – Home of the 2009 Division II Boys Championship this year. It was a time of fellowship and teaching about not only the crown to be won at states, but also the crown of life that is promised to all that follow Christ. The golf team’s motto continues to be “perseverance,” expressed in James 1:12. “This team became a family this year. They love being together. That is what made the way this season ended so hard,” commented Coach Bucciarelli. The Royals were on the unfortunate side of a redistricting issue that left them out of the championships this year, finishing fourth at Districts. “I am so proud of these guys because they achieved all of the goals we set out at the beginning of the year except winning the state championship,” Bucciarelli said. The Royals won the PAC by sweeping all three tournaments. Jacob Forsythe earned Player of the Year honors and was selected First Team along with team captain Alex Mosteller. Brandon Sommers and Peter Richards were selected to the Second Team. Forsythe and Mosteller were also selected to the All-District First and Second Teams respectively. Other members of the varsity team included William Vanbuskirk, Pete Staker, and Daniel Criswell. “Our team has big shoes to fill with the departure of Mosteller; his leadership will truly be missed,” reflected Bucciarelli.
