Men’s Basketball Finishes an Impressive 2008-09 Season
The 2008-09 CVCA men’s basketball team just completed another outstanding season, compiling a school-record-tying 21 victories and only four losses by a mere 12 points. The Royals finished the PAC tied for second place among the eight teams and were voted the number one seed at the Elyria District Tournament for the first time ever. Defeating Columbia, Independence, Wellington, and Cuyahoga Heights by an average of 23.7 points per game, the Royals captured a second district title in a row and the fourth in the last six years. Throughout each game, a tough defense that only allowed 38.5 points per game all season characterized the Royals’ iron will to win. CVCA’s season ended in the Regional Semi-final with a defeat to the eventual Regional Champion, Tinora, in overtime, 36-34.
Several of the CVCA cagers received post-season awards: Eric Worthey, League Player of the Year, all-PAC conference team, and NE Inland District first team; Mark O’Brien, PAC first team, Honorable Mention for the NE Inland All-District team; Jon Mathoslah, PAC Honorable Mention. Throughout the season, the Royals proved to be deep and experienced team guided by the leadership of seniors Kyle Curry, Stephen Hudson, Adrian Lindsay, Gabe Stanley, and Jake Hay. Juniors Xavier Douglas, Greg Kutchin, and Alex Mosteller, and sophomore Drew Peterson also factored as significant contributors to the Royals’ success. Congratulations to the Royals for a standout year!
